RX Radio presenter and proprietor James Onen aka Fatboy has revealed that he suffered severe depression four years ago.
While on Monday’s The Fatboy Show, Fatboy revealed that he was going through some personal issues that pushed him into severe clinical depression that required him to see a psychiatric.
“Sometimes, it’s as bad as not wanting to get out of bed, you feel numb. What saved me is the fact that I had a job to go to on a daily and that routine helped me from running crazy from the severe feelings I was going through at the moment” he said.
Fatboy and his show co-host Olive Najjuma were discussing depression among the youth especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular a social media incident where a South African lady posted that she felt depressed because she did not feel she had achieved anything at the age of 32.
“I saw all the responses there and realized that a lot of young people/ millennials are struggling with depression and other mental health related issues. This is made worse if the person has no job to go to and has to stay home all day. One of the commenters stated that he was thinking of ending their own life. the situation is real bad” he said.
His co-host Olive Najjuma noted that unemployment is one of the reasons why most young people suffer from depression.
“Imagine having no source of income and yet you have bills to pay. Even if you don’t have a family, you have responsibilities like rent. The landlord is not going to be sympathetic because you have no job, they will want their money in time, it is a sad situation to be in,” she said.
