Last weekend, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to foreign nationals with or without military experience who are willing to volunteer in the struggle against the Russian invasion to join in the fight.
Zelenskyy made the open call over the presidential website where he announced that the Ukrainian forces were setting up a foreign legion unit for international volunteers now known as the International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine.
RX Radio Presenter Daniel Omara, in response to the appeal, said that he would only travel to Ukraine to find a beautiful Ukrainian woman.
“For the models, yes. It's been statistically proven that Eastern European women are among the prettiest in the world. It's the same way we feel about Rwanda and Ethiopia in Africa. So I am not travelling to Russia to fight. I am not going to pretend that I would be part of a war with a country that has nothing to do with me,” Daniel said.
His Co-host James Onen aka Fatboy questioned the call for volunteers to fight for Ukraine as an indirect admission of the country falling despite the western media’s reflection of them being brave with a willingness to fight for their country till their last breath.
“They are not even offering any payments but are expecting us to go and fight for them for free, it's crazy. At least offer a pathway to citizenship because if I am going to fight for your country, I have to be treated as a citizen,” Fatboy suggested.
However, like Daniel, he also admitted that if he were to travel to Ukraine, his interest would be the women and not fighting the Russians.
Fatboy further pondered on the protection of foreign combatants who may not want to return to their countries after the war yet get deported out of Ukraine for not possessing any legal documents.
“What if the Ugandans who go fight for Russia become prisoners of war and are taken to Russian prisoner camps, jails or even Siberia? Zelenskyy is being reckless here,” he added.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba urged volunteers that would like to fight on behalf of Ukraine to contact the defence attache of the Ukrainian embassies in their countries.
