18 year-old winner of the the Pearl of Africa POA Star Search 2020, Vocalist and Uganda Tourism Ambassador, Nansambu Sandra, has revealed that it was at the Pearl of Africa Star Search boot camp where she learnt how to associate and interact with people.
Nansambu, who was being hosted by RX Radio Presenter Crystal on The Groove show during the Groove Cafe segment, confessed that she always had difficulty expressing herself confidently amidst people- a fear that she was able to overcome during the camp.
“You might consider talking to people as something easy but it's not. Sometimes I’d find myself in a corner spectating (giggles) but I was able to step out of my comfort zone through constantly engaging with others and it helped to build my confidence.”
The Tourism Ambassador whose theme was based on inspiring People with Disabilities sang a Whitney Houston song (Greatest Love of All) while at the grand finale. When asked by Crystal as to why she chose to sing this particular one, the Singer replied that she wanted to motivate people like her to know that everything in the world is possible.
“When I was still young I used to listen to Whitney Houston and ‘Greatest Love of All’ was my best song because it defines me. I also wanted to change people’s mindsets and show them that disability is not inability. To those with low self esteem, and those who keep thinking that they are so different, I wanted to show them that they have to love themselves before they can be accepted, loved and helped by others,” she said.
When asked about how she was going to promote the tourism industry, Nansambu said she plans to start her new role by availing affordable travel options to Ugandans and altering the attitudes of the locals who think that touring is supposed to be for the rich white foreigners.
