Former Presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, on Monday 1st officially filed a petition with the High Court to challenge the outcome of the just concluded general presidential election over rigging allegations.
Bobi Wine says that the election was rigged in favor of the incumbent President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who was announced winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) with 58% while Bobi Wine came second with 35%.
“We have overwhelming evidence that the election was mulled with irregularities, voter bribery, ballot stuffing, harassment of opposition agents among others. We want the court to nullify the election and prohibit General Museveni from participating in any future elections,” Bobi Wine stated shortly after filing the petition.
Olive Najjuma, a presenter with RX Radio urged the courts to take a closer look at the evidence that will be presented by NUP and give a fair judgement.
“There are so many videos of ballot stuffing, voter bribery and some uncoordinated figures. I feel there is so much evidence this time and the courts should endeavor to be fair and balanced in their ruling. Of course that may be hard given their stance in previous petitions. Also, it’s hard to expect court to be impartial given that the incumbent is their boss,” Olive said during the Tuesday morning Fatboy show.
The Fatboy Show co-host James Onen aka Fatboy expressed skepticism on whether the courts can be really independent to the extent of overturning a presidential election.
“We have seen these cases before in the case of FDC’s like that of Kizza Besigye where court admitted that there was indeed malpractices in the election but said the evidence wasn’t sufficient enough to nullify the election but we wait and see,” said Fatboy.
