Olive: It's High Time People Practiced Self Preservation In The Wake Of Heightened Crime

In a press briefing yesterday, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed a trend of armed criminals in Kampala who are brutally snatching phones with the aid of knives, leaving victims with life-threatening injuries.

Addressing journalists yesterday, Enanga noted that a gang of boda boda cyclists ride in groups of two or three and attack people talking on their phones with knives wounding them dangerously.

Reacting to the distressing acts, Olive Najjuma, a presenter of The Fatboy Show on RX Radio, said people need to avoid picking up calls and speaking over their phones while walking on busy roads.

“I think it's high time citizens exercised a degree of self-preservation. If you are sitting on a boda boda, keep your phone away. But sometimes you will see people typing or speaking on their phones while sitting o a moving boda boda or people using their phones with their car windows down,” she said.

In the same way, James Onen, another presenter of the show, advised the public to refrain from receiving or making calls on the roadside. He suggested using BlueTooth earphones or headphones to avoid falling prey to criminals.

Another contributor to the show from Tokyo, Ariong Girfansio, reasoned that the nature of crime reflects an underlying problem in the country.

“A phone is not the best thing to steal because it can be tracked. But if someone takes such a risk, then that indicates a deeper problem. I think the best solution is to unravel the real cause of such crimes because so many other crimes are also going on."

He, therefore, proposed that the government should determine why the criminals are choosing such dangerous paths to make the necessary interventions because the situation may get worse, especially with the high cost of living caused by the skyrocketing prices of commodities.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, and Sarah every weekday from 6 am to 10 am on RX Radio.
