The Fatboy Show presenters Daniel and Olive have expressed concern on how the denial of accessibility for Israeli's Energy Minister at the COP26 Climate Change Summit was pure negligence.
The summit, held in Glasgow Scotland, saw diplomats converge to discuss and set out ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse emissions and adapt to the impact of a warming planet.
However, the Israeli Minister for Energy and Water Resources Karine Elharrar, who has muscular dystrophy and moves by a wheelchair, missed the first day of the summit because the only way to get to the conference venue was to walk by foot, or by shuttle which couldn't also accommodate a wheelchair.
After waiting for two hours in vain, Elharrar returned to her hotel in Edinburgh and tweeted, “It is sad that the UN, which promotes accessibility for people with disabilities, in 2021, does not provide accessibility to its events," she wrote. "Hopefully the lessons learned will be learned so that tomorrow green energy promotion, removal of barriers and energy efficiency will be the things I will deal with.”
According to Olive, if this was an oversight in the beginning, the event organisers should have fixed it since the world is already in the age of improvised structures and artificial technology that such incidents are almost unheard of.
“She was at the grounds in Glasgow for two hours waiting for someone to attend to her and they didn't!” She added, “No one chooses to be wheelchair bound, so in the beginning it might have been an oversight of not knowing details of her physical impairment, but for her to wait that long was negligence.”
Daniel, concerned about how the situation was handled said that, “This is why we need corporal punishment back because this was plain negligence. How would they not consider this in their budget yet am sure they did cater for vegan foods, gluten-free meals and halloween candies yet a person who needed special care was left out.”
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
