Lesham: Companies May Need To Re-think Their Working hours

While talking about productivity at work places, RX Radio’s Lesham Kenogo opined that companies should re-adjust from traditional working hours to those that support employee productivity.

She made the recommendations after scientific evidence showed that the human brain is not fully functional until 10am, although most workplaces require their employees to report at work as early as between 6am and 9am.

“Personally, I am not a morning person, like I can do four hours worth of work in an hour if I do it at the right time. I think that employees are obsessed with morning hours but I'm glad that science is on my side,” she said.

James Onen, mostly known as Fatboy, a Co-host of the show, reasoned that the culture has been created by the short work hours of the day where most employers want to maximize and get value for their money paid to workers.

“If you're an employer and the one paying for people to get operations going, you won't feel okay with people not coming to work early enough, because this is true for anything that's worth investing in.” For example, he continued, “If you buy a car, you want to experience your full money’s worth; or when you take someone on a date and pay for a nice meal. You will at some point want to get your money’s worth, which I think applies to a job as well,” he commented.

More still, Lesham argued that a number of European countries now have four-day work weeks but have still managed to keep sustainable economies with that structure. “So why do we feel entitled to follow the American system of 9-5, 6 days a week type of thing when others are living their best lives in only four days?” she asked.

This question made Fatboy curious about the time the work day ends given that most people tend to get sleepy and exhausted after lunch breaks and would have to be active from 10am to 1pm. Lesham, in response, contended that it has been said that a person has four hours of productivity which is the best time for one to complete hard tasks and use the rest for less stressful ones.

In addition, Fatboy recommended that workers could adjust the time in which they do intellectually demanding work between 10am and 1pm, for example emails and business proposals, then use the time before 10a.m to liven up.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
