Fatboy: When Using Google Maps, You Have To Use Your Intuition Too

Anyone who has used GPS to get to their unknown destination before has a funny or not very funny story to tell. From the pronunciation of non-english names to the destinations they sometimes found themselves at, it's always a conversation that revives humorous memories.

In Portland, a woman drove her SUV down a flight of stairs at a Maine police pedestrian plaza, claiming that she was following her GPS instructions. However, the police officers didn't buy her claim, discerning that she was under the influence of alcohol.

“One of the strange things that happens with GPS location finding is that sometimes these pins are not very accurate.” Said James Onen, The Fatboy Show host on RX Radio.

“I've been in situations where I've found myself led to swampy areas, dead ends and other unsavory places because I was trying to follow what the lady was narrating to me which turns to take, only to find that I ended up in the opposite destination,” he added.

His co-host Daniel Omara also narrated his encounter while on a trip upcountry for his comedy show. He recounted that they were given a pin to a five star hotel only to take the directions and find themselves in front of a random grass thatched hut.

“I think to make it clear, if you ever want to use your GPS, you have to at the same time use your head. Use your intuition. If the road seems to be leading to a strange place, you better call the person directing you to know if you're really going the right direction otherwise you'll end up in a very bad place.” Fatboy said.

He further reminisced that he almost got into trouble once when he drove to the outskirts of Kampala following a pin to a friend's place without clearly marked roads insisting that the user should use their intuition or call for further directions.

“Keep calling to check if you're in the right vicinity otherwise you could end up in a bush and be attacked by thugs. It almost happened to me as I was trying to get to some guy’s place somewhere deep in Najeera. And the house itself was beautiful. It was just that the road leading to it was like something out of a horror movie,” Fatboy concluded.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
