Fatboy: Mental Health Professionals Haven’t Been Astute In Defining The Parameters Of Mental Health

Fatboy Show presenter James Onen aka Fatboy expressed his concern towards the behaviour of society that's increasingly taking every challenge as a mental health concern.

This was during the Fatboy Show on RX Radio with guest host Daniel Omara. The discussion arose from the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada that established a room with puppy dogs basically to relieve stress and tension of students during the exam periods.

As a dog owner, Fatboy said that he can understand how pets can relieve stress though it was unnecessary for a University to be providing these services.

“On one hand we are told mental health this, mental health that. Much as it is important, isn’t there a point where the line gets crossed? When everyone decides not to have any responsibility but wants to be treated like babies? I think our mental health professionals have not been very astute in showing us the parameters to this conversation,” he said.

Daniel said that much as school is supposed to prepare a learner for the outside world, it also provides extra- curricular activities that ease stress. According to him, if the puppy room was designed for high school students, it would be more understandable than one at University where learners have freedom and fewer routine classes to attend.

Fatboy added that society today is facing a challenge of being emotionally driven. Decisions are taken based on one’s emotions.

“In the world we live in today, we have a challenge of according feelings to everything. All that matters is how one feels, if they are offended by words, that is violence. If they don’t like a character in a certain movie, they should be paid restitution and so this puppy room stuff fits into the culture where everyone is so fragile and they can't take up a joke or offence and constantly need to be cuddled,”Fatboy said.

He attributed this culture as being one that causes stagnation of society which can’t allow debates on controversial issues because of the offence some people may take from it.

Daniel Omara quoted Jordan Peterson who said that for any society to progress it must risk offence because when people have contradicting opinions, It may seem like an argument that might offend both parties, but at the end of a meeting a resolution means progress.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
