While commenting on the appalling events that happened in Alebtong District in which a 25-year-old man torched 29 grass-thatched houses after finding out that his father had been killed, Presenter Fatboy expressed empathy saying that it’s sad the arsonist’s father had to die for allegedly stealing goats.
John Steven Eyano, a 70-year-old resident of Omoting village, Angetta sub-county in Alebtong District was accused of stealing three goats and was intercepted by the LC1 Chairperson Geoffrey Okello together with a group of individuals.
When Eyano returned from a swamp where he had taken his animals to graze, it is reported that the Chairperson and his team tried to settle the matter amicably but the old man refused to co-operate and ended up beaten to death.
“I can sympathize with the man because it must have been painful thinking about his father dying for something so trivial. It's one thing to accuse someone of stealing goats when it hasn't been established if they actually stole them that he even loses his life over the allegation! It just seems so sad that in this country, such a minor thing can lead to a drastic outcome for someone held in suspicion,” Fatboy said.
Further commenting on the son who burnt the 29 houses in revenge, Fatboy said that both acts may be a sign of a deeper problem in the country which could be the increasing use of drugs among youths.
“16 percent of Ugandans are constantly under the use of drugs and one wonders whether or not this 25-year-old man might have been under the influence of something. It’s undeniable that he must have been so upset and took things a bit too far.”
However, Fatboy condemned the man's act of taking the law in his own hands saying that it's never the way to settle grievances of any sort. “I hope that as his father’s murderers are brought to book, he too is brought to book for burning down people's houses because someone whose property was burnt might have had nothing to do with the death of his father,” he reasoned.
The son of the deceased was arrested on the night of February 28, 2022 and is currently beingdetained at Alebtong’s central Police Station.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
