During investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), a total of Shs.11.6 billion has been retrieved from suspects that disguised as teachers and stole money meant to be provided as a revolving fund for teachers last year.
According to Charles Twine the CID Spokesperson, when the government released the money, the individuals rushed to set up 42 duplicate Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) that enabled them acquire money deceptively. However, suspicions arose after money from the teacher's accounts was being deducted for loans they had never taken, hence stirring investigation.
According to RX Radio Presenter Fatboy, despite corruption being a societal vice that should be subdued, those involved should at least do it in a smart way.
“Of course we frown about corruption, and it should be criticized at all times but if you are to engage in it, you need to be smart at least because it looks like these guys left a lot of loopholes. And since Uganda's corruption is endemic, perhaps some people are brazen and assume they will be protected because they have bribed off enough people, but that's not always a guarantee that you will be in the clear,” he said.
Olive, his Co-host, added that sometimes it may not be about bribing but being affiliated to the “right people.” “I watched a video where a woman and her husband bought land on Entebbe road and held all the legal documents of it’s ownership but a guy came and started construction on their land and told them that they wouldn’t be able to do anything about it because he is related to people that matter.”
Olive added how the couple have reported the case to all police stations and even the State House Anti-Corruption Unit but have since received no justice.
In conclusion, the duo congratulated the agency for the job well done. However, they were concerned that stolen money is never recovered since it goes through an entirety of checks and processes done by the “big fish” and in the end it is those at the lower levels that are always arrested.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
