Fatboy And Olive: Online Dating Makes Relationships Disposable

On The Fatboy Show Monday morning, James Onen, aka Fatboy, claimed that online dating has made it easy for people to have too many options undermining the possibility of long-term relationships.

The presenter and his co-host Olive Najjuma were having a conversation about online dating, and they both agreed that it has more cons than pros.

“I think online dating has made relationships quite disposable. I know guys that go on an app like Facebook and message 20, 30 to 50 girls because it costs nothing to send ‘hello beautiful’ to whichever random pictures of women you may like," Fatboy said.

He explained that online dating is like a betting game for men trying to find love on messaging apps like Facebook because many women will not reply, but a few might have similar interests.

“...90 percent will not respond to you, but then 10 percent will and out of the that, 5 percent might be willing to converse with you, 2 percent might be willing to meet up with you and may be out the 2 percent, 1 percent may be willing to sleep with you,” he added.

Olive also thus reasoned that online dating makes sex more accessible today than it has ever been.

“Unlike in the past where you would be; 'like if I break up with this guy, how am I getting another one?' Lately, women are shooting their shots on online dating sites. If you sign onto Tinder and swipe right, you're already shooting your shots at this guy. If he matches with you and you get a conversation going, that is 1 guy and so could be 2 or 3 more,” Olive said.

But she posits that having so many options to choose from makes dating online even more difficult since a few will be willing to put in the effort to make a relationship work.

“Someone may talk to 5 people and develop an interest in 1 or 2, but if things go south with that 1, s(he) will go back and start talking to the other four. So you always have a plan B, C D…"

The presenters, therefore, surmised that Online dating is best for people interested in flings that may sometimes turn into romantic relationships, although it is very time-consuming and exhausting.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, and Sarah every weekday from 6 am to 10 am on RX Radio.
