Worship Leader, Singer and Youth Worker at Deliverance Church Makerere, Corazon Aquino Onena, has encouraged positive motivation of the youth, especially during this pandemic.
The youth worker, while in an interview with Crystal Newman on RX radio, said when she was younger, she was able to experience and see the impact of both negative and positive energy on her life.
“I think that when someone is young, impressionable and open to learning, the right seeds and messages of encouragement should be sown in them. They should be challenged to aim for greatness. In my younger years, I experienced both positive and negative influences in my life and saw the impact they had on me. So when I say that I am alive because of the grace of God, it seems like a joke to many but it's very serious and important to me because I've walked it.”
She further said that working with young people and getting positive feedback from even one of them inspires her since she believes that changing one soul can create a mass impact on the larger community.
Noting the effect of the pandemic on young people in regards to their mental health as well as the restrictions of physical interactions, she said they have had programs to encourage youth online and at least have them congregate once a month to discuss their spiritual and mental health.
“When you get time to yourself, you may start feeling alone mentally, physically and even begin feeling emotionally drained because of being surrounded with so much negativity. We’ve seen so many teenage suicides and the reasons behind them are preventable if this person had been given emotional encouragement and support to help them break the boxes they were in. So we try to get these boxes open by giving youth more space to be listened to and heard,” Onena said.
The Deliverance Church Makerere Hill youth services are dedicated to young people aged 13-19, university students from 19-23 years and young workers from 22- 29 years.
The Church’s youth services are held on Facebook and Zoom every last three Thursdays of the month, with a focus on challenges affecting young people.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
