While disputing the accession of the Democratic Republic of Congo into the East African Community, RX Radio presenter Olive Najjuma has said that the country is yet to understand the significance of this development.
DRC joined the EAC on March 29 as the 7th member state. Its position was sealed by a treaty that was signed on April 8, 2022 in Nairobi Kenya.
Wondering how the approval of the DRC would impact the life of the ordinary citizen, James Onen aka Fatboy queried how the new development would promote economic relations between Uganda and Congo.
“Well if you're asking, why is the government of Uganda constructing roads in the DRC? It is aimed at aiding trade between the two countries,” said Olive Najjuma, the Fatboy Show co-host.
However she said that unlike Kenya and Tanzania which Uganda benefits from in the form of imports, she questioned the trade benefits from the two countries.
Fatboy recalled that back in the 90’s Uganda used to import musicians from the DR Congo, when congolese music was the rage before Uganda's local music industry blossomed.
He also acclaimed Lt.Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba the Commander Land Forces and also the first son for mending the relations between Uganda and Rwanda. Presidents Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Paul Kagame of Rwanda met for the first time after three years to witness the signing of the treaty that made Congo part of the East African Community.
However, Olive contended Muhoozi’s contribution in restoring peace between Uganda and Rwanda, saying that he just incorporated what had already been settled.
“I could be careful saying Muhoozi did the work because he came in right at the last minute. The talks had been going on for two years. I have nothing against him but am like, doesn't it sound a bit convenient to say that at the very last minute, he's the one that did the work!” she wondered.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
