Today morning on The Fatboy Show, Sarah, Fatboy and Lesham expressed divergent views on whether building a presence on social media is important.
This was after Lesham narrated a story of a Kenyan preacher and motivational speaker Robert Burale who advised netizens not to invest time in growing their social media followers at the expense of building legacies for their children, arguing that there is no career called ‘celebrity,’ and that a real career is what a person's children and grandchildren celebrate them for.
Lesham strongly disagreeing with the preacher said; “I don't understand the disconnect between the generations because all I see on social media are people marketing and selling their products and using that money to build houses and cars which is also building a legacy.”
Fatboy, pointing to Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, said the two have been able to create massive profits from being celebrities and using social media to their advantage.
He added; “I think it's generally what you do with the social media following. If you are just doing it to get high off the likes and comments, then maybe that's a waste of time. But if it's one that you use to build a following to sell merchandise to, or to influence it for companies, then I think that's smart and essentially business.”
However, Sarah explained that the preacher might have been referring to people who were using social media to parade themselves as instagram models, sell themselves or even those with large followings who just do not utilise them wisely.
Further still, Fatboy regarded social media as a tool that can be used to one's advantage. He commended social media as a communication tool that RX Radio uses to engage with listeners and fans.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
