With the rest of the economy hoping to reopen on January 25th, a lot of concerns regarding the economic welfare of Ugandans still stands in question.
Today on The Fatboy Show, RX Radio’s James Onen, commonly known as Fatboy, expressed concern towards the increased indulgence of youth in criminal activities which he faults on the long lockdowns that he said might have spurred the misdoings.
“This might be one of the unforeseen or foreseeable consequences of the lockdown.” He added, “The fact that the economy was shut down for this long, a lot of young people are going to find themselves becoming desperate and impoverished leading them into a life of crime.”
Lesham Kenogo, his Co-host also shockingly narrated that in the same period, she got robbed by a friend. “I had a friend that I stopped talking to after I gave her some money for things she told me she was selling, and she just disappeared with the money! So I was like if this is my own friend robbing me, then we have no hope.”
The subject arose after a group of 40 suspected thugs aged between 14-25 that were arrested by police in connection to violent crime carried out along the Northern bypass in Kampala.
The suspects were captured in a joint security operation following a public outcry of individuals, both pedestrians and motorists, who were being beaten and robbed of their possessions.
“The situation in the country has just brought up the worst in a lot of people,” Fatboy said.
Lesham then encouraged vigilance since having a decent lifestyle where one can buy food and pay their rent seems a privilege that can get you robbed by a friend.
“People nowadays carry out robberies in broad daylight and are willing to risk their lives because it’s either that or they starve to death. Others are getting enraged over trivial situations, stabbing and killing others unintentionally.”
The two Presenters agreed on the need to handle issues related with people’s mental health ahead of full reopening of other sectors, and applauded the Police for the job well done in their attempts to maintain the security of people and their property.`
