RX Radio Presenter James Onen aka Fatboy has revealed that he attended therapy sessions once when he was having a rough time and it eventually helped him.
The Presenter made the revelations during the Fatboy show with his Co-host Lesham as they were discussing negative emotions and how therapy can be of help .
“I've had sessions with therapists one time when I was undergoing some difficult situations and ultimately, though I was prescribed some medicine, what actually helped me heal was time. I just needed time to reflect on the situation and deflect from the problems I was going through.”
“I think the purpose of therapy is to keep someone distracted long enough that they do not hurt themselves because by the time one seeks therapy, they are desperate for help. I wouldn’t consider conversations therapists give as what helps but rather, the time you are kept distracted protects you from harming yourself,” Fatboy said.
Fatboy advised that instead of one seeking therapy, they should get out there and do things that fill their lives with purpose; and that while a person seeks therapy, they have to take actions to change or solve the problem.
However, according to Lesham, therapy helps one identify and evaluate their behaviour and how they react to it since therapists, unlike friends or family, give objective opinions of one’s life and provide homework to do to improve their situation. She said that time alone can’t help one get over a situation but rather putting into practice exercises given by their therapists otherwise they might not rightfully heal and continue with the destructive behaviour.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy and Lesham Kenogo every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
