James Onen aka Fatboy has advised against the use of cheap building materials for construction saying they could potentially cause great disaster in the near future.
Referring to the incident that happened in Bweyogerere on Wednesday where a three-storeyed building collapsed and injured five people, Fatboy reasoned that substandard construction does not only risk human life but also creates big losses for the owner when it collapses.
“If you happen to be constructing a commercial building or even your house, please don't go cheap. Because aside from the terrible loss of life and injuries people might sustain, the fact is whoever was the owner of this building has lost money now, and whatever money he thought he was saving by going cheap, has now all been lost,” he said.
Olive, the show’s Co-host, commented on how the recent increase of collapsing buildings has been attributed to the poor quality materials, mostly those made locally. She further added that, “Owners of commercial buildings make a mistake of using cheap materials not realising the costs that will come with the recurrent need for renovation.”
According to the National Buildings Review Board, the major cause behind the collapse of most buildings is the use of unqualified engineers to construct and supervise construction works.
Olive further wondered how such incidents keep happening despite the presence of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) that is supposed to investigate and authorize such operations. “Of course they probably bribed someone here and there but it would be nice that whichever KCCA officer approved the commencement of the construction is held accountable for that oversight otherwise more of these incidents are going to keep happening,” said Fatboy.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, Sarah and Lesham every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
